Fabric collage

I am back today with another swap project for the Art For the Creative Mind Yahoo Group. I was pretty far out of my comfort level on this one. This was a fabric collage swap and I am no means a seamstress plus all of my fun patterned fabric is packed away.

After searching around on Pinterest I had an idea. What about using paper towels that I had leftover from wiping up ink, paint, and my stamps? I have a ton of them. Here is the post that started the idea. I also recently watched a Jennibellie video where she glued paper towels together to make them into a fabric like material. After gluing all of my towels I decided they still needed a bit more stiffness so I used some heatbond and adhered some muslin to the back. The picture below shows a sample of some. They really are pretty pliable and fabric like.

Next I transferred on my patterns and started hand embroidering. This took a while - remember I am not a seamstress.

After hand sewing for a few days, I decided to doodle in the fine details with some gel pens. My fingers were getting quite sore and I was a bit afraid I would mess up my progress.

I then adhered the patches to an 8x8 chipboard panel covered with canvas. I added a die cut flower to the center and then stamped and inked the edges.

I was actually quite happy with my finished piece. This won't be the last papertowel/fabric collage I do. I am going to submit this to the Stampendous Handmade/Heartfelt Challenge. I hope i have inspried you to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.
