Sea Life's Beauty

I have just recently found out about art Zines (mini art magazines) and decided to give a go at one. Not sure if you can really call it a Zine if I am not planning on publishing it, but I decided to try anyways. I choose a ocean/sea theme. Here is my first page.

I started out by making some background papers. I painted some white copy paper and stenciled and stamped over it. I also used some scrapbooking paper that I stenciled over. The strips of paper are painted mulberry paper.

Next I tore the paper into strips and adhered it to my page. I also used some vintage maps.

For the mermaids I sketched out a mermaids tail onto tracing paper (to fit my vintage photo) and then cut the shape out of patterned paper.

I used a vintage photo for the top half of my mermaids and then adhered the tail to the photo. I then cut around the mermaids and adhered that to my page. I did not like how the bottom of the mermaids tail looked so I ended up painting it and adding in some pen marks to mimic fins.

I wanted to add in some seaweed so I adhered some fibers and mesh to the background.

Lastly I added in my typed saying. I am submitting this to the Frilly and Funkie Vintage Seaside challenge. Be sure to stay tuned for my finished Zine and as always thank you for stopping by!

  2. Oh my, I just love what you have done here! The background papers you create are fantastic and the way you transformed the bathing beauties into mermaids is positively brilliant. Thanks so much for sharing it with us over at Frilly and Funkie!
